The development process of single-mode optical fiber
Leave a message
In 1980, when international scholars, including Chinese scholars, were discussing which was better between single-mode fiber and multi-mode fiber, Academician Huang Hongjia of ShanghaiTech University recognized that long wavelength single-mode fiber had the advantages of low loss and low dispersion, making it an ideal medium for long-distance high-capacity communication systems. The research team led by Academician Huang Hongjia proposed the suggestion of conducting research on single-mode optical fibers in 1979. This proposal has received support from the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission and has listed "single-mode fiber research" as a key scientific research project in Shanghai. The second phase of research work was conducted by May 1982. The collaboration between Shanghai University of Science and Technology and Shanghai Quartz Glass Factory has received support and cooperation from the 23rd Institute of Electronics. In May 1982, the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission presided over an appraisal work involving 24 experts from 9 Chinese units. The appraisal committee believes that "this single-mode fiber research work is fundamental and pioneering, not only filling the gap in China's important research field, but also catching up with the international level at a relatively fast pace.
